5-Minute Training touch pad session: Mentally & Physically Tire Your Dog

Think you can’t tire out your high-energy dog in five minutes? Think again! This training session combines a touchpad and your dog’s favourite toy to work their mind and body.

The Setup

You’ll need:

  • A small touchpad or any target object your dog can recognize (like a rubber mat or platform).
  • Your dog’s favourite motivator: a tug, ball, treats, or praise.
  • A space of 10–20 feet is all you need!

The Exercise

  1. Teach or Review Touchpad Basics
    • If your dog is new to touchpads, start simple. Reward them for stepping on or touching the pad.
    • For experienced dogs, use this as a warm-up.
  1. Set Your Timer for 5 Minutes
    • Send your dog to the touchpad and reward them with their motivator.
    • Add variety:
      • Distance: Gradually increase the distance they must run to the pad.
      • Speed: Rapid-fire repetitions keep the energy up.
      • Focus: Incorporate commands like “sit” or “stay” at the pad before rewarding.

Why It Works

  • Physical Exercise: Running to and from the touchpad burns off energy.
  • Mental Engagement: Your dog must focus on commands, anticipate rewards, and work through variations.
  • Customizable for All Dogs: Whether using a tug, ball, treats, or praise, this exercise fits any dog’s preferences.

Pro Tips

  • Mix It Up: Don’t fall into a pattern! Alternate rewards and change commands to keep your dog guessing.
  • Stay Positive: Use enthusiastic cues and rewards to keep it fun and engaging.
  • Start Small: New to touchpads? Begin with short distances and simple commands, then build complexity.

The Result

After just five minutes, your dog will be mentally stimulated and physically tired, ready to relax and recharge. This training session is about making the most of your training time, focusing on basic exercises that deliver big results.

You DO have time to train. Set aside five minutes, grab your touchpad and toy, and give it a shot. Let me know how your dog did!
