5-Minute training session going around: Exercise Your Dog Physically and Mentally

Looking for a quick and productive way to train your dog? This 5-minute training session will engage your pup’s mind and body, leaving them happily tired! All you need is a tug toy (or a ball on a rope) and a yard stake or sturdy post. Here’s how it works:

Step 1: The Setup

  1. Drive the stake or pole in your lawn.
  2. Have your tug toy ready—this will be the key motivator for your dog.

Step 2: Teach the “Around” Command

If your dog doesn’t already know the "around" command, start simple:

  • Use a treat to lure your dog around the pole in a circle.
  • Repeat until they follow the motion consistently.
  • Gradually phase out the treat and switch to a toy as their reward.

Step 3: Start the training session

Set a timer for 5 minutes and get to work!

  • Stand 10-20 feet away from the stake
  • Command your dog to go “around” the stake.
  • Once they complete the circle, let them engage with the tug as a reward.
  • Mix it up! Sometimes, let your dog immediately bite the tug. Other times, challenge them to go “around” again before getting the reward.

Why It Works

  • Physical Energy: Running around the pole and engaging in tug burns energy.
  • Mental Energy: Your dog must focus and exercise discipline by moving away from the tug to earn it.

Pro Tips

  • No Yard? No Problem! This works in a small space as long as you have room for your dog to circle.
  • Customize for Your Dog: If your dog prefers a ball on a rope, use that instead of a tug. Puppies can use treats as a motivator.
  • Keep It Fun: Stay upbeat and make it rewarding—your dog will love the training session!

At the end of 5 minutes, your dog will be mentally and physically exhausted, ready to relax and recharge. This exercise is proof that quality training beats quantity every time.

Give it a try and let me know how it goes. Happy training!
